The University of Mount Olive finished second overall in the race for the 2016-17 Conference Carolinas Joby Hawn Cup. The Hawn Cup goes to the conference school with the year's best overall athletics performance.
The Trojans won Conference Carolinas championships in Baseball, Women's Tennis, Men's Outdoor Track & Field, Women's Outdoor Track & Field, Men's Indoor Track & Field, Women's Indoor Track & Field, Men's Cross Country, and Women's Cross Country. Mount Olive also had runner-up finishes in women's lacrosse and men's volleyball.
"This has been another successful year for our athletics program. We led the league in championships and have now finished in the top two for the Hawn Cup in each of the last six years. This success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes and coaches," said Vice President of Athletics Jeff Eisen.
The Hawn Cup is determined by a points system based on each school's regular season finish in a conference sport, along with bonus points for conference tournament finish. The number of conference sports sponsored by each school is also a factor.
The Hawn Cup dates back to 1975-76. In 2010-11, the Hawn Cup was expanded to include overall, men's sports and women's sports champions.
Mount Olive captured its first-ever Hawn Cup in 2011-12, sweeping all three awards.
