Lakeland, Fla. --- The University of Mount Olive baseball team dropped a pitcher's duel to Florida Southern College, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in Lakeland, Florida.

How It Happened


  • Mount Olive got to work early as the Trojans recorded three hits in the top of the first inning, but could not push a run across.
  • Once again in the top of the second, UMO had a pair of runners in scoring position with two outs but could not tally its first run.
  • The Trojans were retired in order from the third through the eighth inning as Mount Olive's early momentum was captured by Florida Southern.
  • In the pitcher's duel, the Moccasins found their breakthrough in the bottom of the eighth as Austin Mauer hit a two-out RBI double to center field to score what would be the game-winning run for Florida Southern.


  • Junior Brighton Hudson pitched seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing seven hits and striking out five in the no-decision.
  • Coming on in the bottom of the eighth, junior Zach Vennaro (0-1) was credited with the loss, pitching a single inning, allowing one run on one hit and striking out one.
  • Five Trojans recorded a hit in the loss.
