UMO Baseball Tops No. 6 USC Aiken 1-0

Mount Olive, N.C. --- The University of Mount Olive baseball team took a pitcher's duel from preseason nationally 6th-ranked USC Aiken, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon in Mount Olive, N.C.

Score: Mount Olive 1, USC Aiken 0
Records: Mount Olive (6-2), USC Aiken (7-2)
Location: Scarborough Field, Mount Olive, N.C.

How It Happened

  • Mount Olive struggled to get any offensive threat in the beginning of the game as the Trojans only managed a single baserunner per inning, with only one getting into scoring position, through the first three innings.
  • USC Aiken had an opportunity to score in the top of the second as the Pacers had the bases loaded with one out. UMO however, kept USCA off the board recording a strikeout and a flyout to escape the jam.
  • The sixth inning proved to be the deciding inning for Mount Olive as catcher Jose Lopez led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Following two putouts, Zach Mozingo reached first after being hit by a pitch. David Mayo loaded up the bases after he worked out a walk.
  • A pitching change for USC Aiken proved to be costly as a wild pitch allowed Mayo to score the sole run of the game.
  • Mozingo came in from his outfield position to close out the Pacers in the top of the ninth in order as Mount Olive took the second game of the three-game series.

  • Senior Austin Hutchison (3-0) picked up the win for Mount Olive going eight complete, allowing three hits with three walks and struck out 10.
  • Zach Mozingo (S3) picked up his third save of the season as he shut the door in the ninth.
  • Ricky Surum, Nate Estes, and Jose Lopez all had a pair of hits to lead the offense for Mount Olive.
