North Georgia Wins 2017 NCAA DII Southeast Regional Championship

Mount Olive, N.C. --- The No. 6 and second-seeded University of North Georgia won the 2017 NCAA Division II Baseball Southeast Regional at Scarborough Field in Mount Olive, N.C. Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened


  • North Georgia found the opening score in the bottom of the third. Steven Tomlinson drew a lead-off walk to begin the inning and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Andres Perez drove in Tomlinson with an RBI-single up the middle and the Nighthawks took an early lead.
  • The Nighthawks added solo runs in fifth and sixth innings to extend their cushion to 3-0.
  • Catawba found an answer to the NGU run in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out Jeremy Simpson singled through the left side to score Bryce Fowler. Luke Setzer then added another run to the board with a sacrifice fly to score Nick Coble and Catawba trailed 3-2.
  • NGU added another run in the bottom of the seventh off a Bill Leroy double.
  • The Indians tied the game in the top of the eighth with RBI base hits from Fowler and Coble to knot the game at four heading into the bottom of the eighth.
  • Perez for North Georgia gave the Nighthawks the final run cushion with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth and the Nighthawks held off Catawba in the ninth to win the 2017 NCAA DII Southeast Regional.
