Trojans Named To Multiple NCAA DII Southeast All-Region Teams

The University of Mount Olive had six Trojans named to several NCAA Division II Southeast All-Region teams. Drew Ellis, Austin Hutchison, David Mayo, Zack Mozingo, Ricky Surum, and Bruce Zimmermann landed spots on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of AmericaD2 Conference Commissioners Association, and the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA DII All-Region teams.

Head Coach Carl Lancaster was named NCBWA Southeast Region Coach of the Year after leading his team to a 48-10 overall season and UMO's 14th Conference Carolinas Championship and eighth straight appearance in the Division II tournament.

Ellis, a junior from Blythewood, S.C., was named to the first team all-region squad for D2CCA and earned second team honors on the NCWBA all-region team. The junior led the team with 19 home runs, two coming in the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament held at Mount Olive, and 51 walks this season with a second best 56 RBI and .349 overall average. He was also a Conference Carolinas fist team selection.

Hutchison, a senior from Dandridge, Tenn., earned unanimous Regional Pitcher of the Year honors while being placed on the first team of all three all-region teams. The senior was named the Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Year and a first team All-Conference Carolinas selection. He finished the season 12-1 record with a 1.82 ERA. Hutchison led all pitchers nationally in NCAA Division II with 12 victories and is fourth nationally with seven complete games this season. He also ranked 22nd nationally in NCAA Division II with 97 strikeouts in 94 innings this season. Hutchison was named the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week once during the season by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Mayo, a senior from Bethlehem, Ga., was named honorable mention on the NCWBA All-Region team. Mayo drove in 31 RBI and batted .313 as one of the Trojans primary three starters in the outfield. He was also a Conference Carolinas fist team selection.

Mozingo, a senior from Goldsboro, N.C., was a triple threat for UMO this season splitting time between the mound, the outfield, and at DH. The Wayne County native was named to the NCBWA & ABCA All-Region first team at relief pitcher, NCWBA first team at designated hitter, and the D2CCA first team at relief pitcher and second team designated hitter. Mozingo broke the single season saves record this season and finished the year with 13, third highest in NCAA DII, to go along with a 1.22 ERA. At the plate the senior hit .338 with 16 home runs, 13 doubles, and 47 RBI. He was also a Conference Carolinas fist team selection at both DH and relief pitcher.

Surum, a senior from Atlanta, Ga., was named to the ABCA & D2CCA second team and NCBWA honorable mention all-region teams at shortstop. The senior led the team with .372 average with 61 RBI, 12 home runs, 19 doubles, and five triples. Surum was a defensive wall in the middle infield as the senior committed only 10 errors in 255 total opportunities and registered 166 assists for .961 fielding percentage. He was also a Conference Carolinas fist team selection.

Bruce Zimmerman, a senior from Woodstock, Md., was named to the ABCA, D2CCA, and NCBWA second team all-region teams. Zimmerman led the Trojans this season with 129 total strikeouts, tying UMO Alumni and San Diego Padres reliever Carter Capps. The senior posted a 3.18 ERA with a 9-2 overall record over his 99 innings pitched this season. He averaged 11 strikeouts per game and only allowed 24 free passes in his 15 appearances. Zimmermann is also the only Trojan this season to be a two-time selection to the D2CCA NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region team as he was named to the second team in 2016. He was also a Conference Carolinas fist team selection.
