University of Mount Olive earned four first-place finishes and captured the team title at the 2014 Conference Carolinas Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship Sunday at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Trojans won by 22 points to claim their first conference indoor track and field championship to go with two outdoor track and field titles.
Dylan Lafond earned a pair of first-place finishes, winning the 3000 meters and the mile run. Lafond was among four Trojan runners in each of the two events to earn points to add to Mount Olive's team total. In the 3000 meters, Austin Steagall finished second, Aki Kitagawa and Eugenio Gil was sixth. In the mile run, Kitagawa, Jacob Urys and Pol Domenech-Ferrer finished third, fourth and fifth respectively. The Trojans collected 23 of a possible 31 points in each of the two events.
Steagall finished first in the 5000 meters, followed by Lafond in second and Erasmo Ordonez in fourth. Mount Olive earned 22 out of 31 points in the event.
Donavann Thornton, who entered the championship with the best distance in the conference this season in the weight throw, captured first place Sunday by .02 meters. Thornton recorded a distance of 13.52 meters.
Mount Olive finished with 131 points in the 16-event championship. North Greenville was second with 102 points, followed by Limestone in third place with 86 points in the seven-team meet.
JDL Fast Track will also be the site of the 2014 NCAA Division II Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship March 14-15. Lafond, who competed in the mile run last year, already earned an automatic berth in the 3000 meters at this year's championship. Lafond is also a provisional qualifier in the mile run and in the men's distance medley, along with Kitagawa, Urys and Karl Goodman. Steagall posted a provisional qualifying time in the 5000 meters earlier this season.
