Trojans Sweep Barton In Three Sets In Men's Volleyball Season Opener

Angel Dache tallied a match-high 14 kills and University of Mount Olive compiled a .406 team hitting percentage as the Trojans opened the 2014 season with a 25-23, 25-17, 25-20 victory over Barton College in Conference Carolinas men's volleyball Wednesday at Kornegay Arena. The win marked the ninth consecutive year the Trojans have won their home opener and the sixth time in the last eight years the Trojans have won their season opener.

Mount Olive (1-0 overall, 1-0 Conference Carolinas) had not dropped a set against Barton in each of the first five meetings between the two teams, but the Trojans trailed 20-17 in the first set. A kill by Dache and a block by Tyler Yanez and Lewis Einarson highlighted a 3-0 run as the Trojans tied the set.

Barton (0-1, 0-1) put itself within two points of capturing the opening set after a pair of kills by Chad Stanback, Jr., helped give the Bulldogs a 23-22 lead. After a Barton service error gave Mount Olive a side out, Victor Fraga Leal's kill put the Trojans on top 24-23. Mount Olive claimed the first set on a Bulldog attack error on set point.

The Trojans broke away from a one-point game in the second set as a three kills by Dache and an ace by Leal sparked a 7-1 run to give Mount Olive an 18-11 lead. The margin never fell below five points as the Trojans went on to take a two-set lead.

Mount Olive trailed early in the third set, but the Trojans capitalized on three consecutive Barton attack errors to go on top 7-5 and lead the remainder of the set. Kills by Steven Cruse and Alex Palmatier helped the Trojans build a 15-10 lead. Barton used a kill and a block by Zach McCalla to pull within three, but Dache answered with a kill for Mount Olive as the Trojans built the lead to as many as six points. Einarson's kill on match point sealed the win.

Leal finished with nine kills and six digs for Mount Olive, while Cruse and Einarson added six kills apiece. Einarson had no errors in nine attempts as the Trojans finished with 38 kills and 12 errors in 64 attempts. Setter Tyler Yanez recorded 36 assists, while libero Josh Donahue tallied a match-high 10 digs. Yanez and Donahue were both playing their first match for Mount Olive.

McCalla led Barton with 11 kills, while Stanback finished with seven kills. Federico Pagliara recorded 27 assists and three blocks, while Ladislav Lelkes added a match-high four blocks.

Mount Olive heads to the Chicago area this weekend for a pair of matches against national top 10 teams. The Trojans go to Romeoville, Ill., Friday for a 7 p.m. match against No. 9 Lewis. UMO head coach David Heller is an alum of Lewis University. The Trojans then take on No. 2 Loyola (Chicago) Saturday at 5 p.m. Mount Olive was also previously scheduled to travel to Milwaukee, Wis., this weekend to face Cardinal Stritch, but the match has been canceled.
