Wilson, N.C. --- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team advanced to the 2017 Conference Carolinas Men's Volleyball Tournament championship game with a 3-1 victory over second-seeded King University, 25-19, 25-17, 18-25, 25-22, in the Conference Carolinas Tournament semifinals on Friday night in Wilson, N.C.

FIRST SET

  • The Trojans came out of the gates fast as UMO took an early 6-3 lead that was capped off by a service ace by junior Bret Rutledge.
  • UMO increased its lead to five at 10-5 after King service and attack errors.
  • A 3-0 run pushed the Trojans' advantage to its largest point at 15-8 forcing a Tornado timeout.
  • King closed back within four late in the set, but UMO slammed the door on the Tornado with back-to-back points to end the set and grab the 25-19 opening set victory for the Trojans.
  • The Trojans hit a scorching .545 in the first set, while King hit .318.

SECOND SET

  • A tight set in the early going, UMO grabbed a three-point advantage at 8-5.
  • The Trojans' lead swelled to eight at 18-10 following a kill by sophomore Brad Monaghan.

THIRD SET

  • After UMO jumped out to a 6-4 lead, the Tornado responded with a 4-0 run to give King an 8-6 advantage.
