Trojans Wrap Up Play At Armstrong State University Tournament

Madison Johnston tossed a two-hit shutout and Savannah Becker belted a two-run homer as University of Mount Olive defeated Queens University of Charlotte Sunday in the Armstrong State University Softball Tournament at Savannah, Ga. Johnston retired the final 17 batters she faced.

Mount Olive (3-7) built a 2-0 lead on Jazmin Montgomery's rbi-single in the top of the second and Caitlin Ewers' run-scoring single in the fourth. Kelsey Akers, who paced the Trojans' 10-hit attack with three hits, led off the fifth with a single. One out later, Becker hit her second home run of the season to extend the Trojans' lead to 4-0. Akers doubled home a run in the sixth.

Johnston (2-3) allowed singles in the first and second innings, then retired the side in order in each of the final five innings. Johnston faced only one batter over the minimum, striking out two and walking none. Trojan catcher Anna Ingram threw out a runner attempting to steal in the second inning.

Sunday's win avenged Mount Olive's 5-3 loss to Queens Saturday. The game was tied 2-2 after five innings as Ingram drove in a run with a fourth-inning double and Kayla Allen hit her first home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth. The Royals scored the tie-breaking run in the top of the sixth and added two runs in the seventh. Kristin Power doubled in a run in the bottom of the seventh.

Mount Olive finished with a 1-3 record in the tournament after dropping a pair of close games to tournament host Armstrong State, which was the 32nd-highest vote-getter in the 2016 NFCA Division II Softball Preseason Top 25. In Saturday's 4-1 loss, Johnston took a four-hit shutout into the sixth inning before a three-run homer put the Pirates on top to stay.

The Trojans fell to Armstrong State 7-4 Sunday as the Pirates' five-run fourth inning broke open a one-run game. Mount Olive rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth as Callie Ferrell led off the inning with a home run and Akers added a two-run single. The Trojans had the tying run at the plate in both the fourth and seventh innings, but had a runner thrown out at the plate in both innings.

Mount Olive returns to action next weekend as the Trojans travel to Upstate South Carolina for a pair of non-conference doubleheaders. The Trojans are at Newberry next Saturday and at USC Aiken next Sunday.
