Trojans Sweep Doubleheader Against Valkyries

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive softball team swept the doubleheader against the Valkyries of Converse College in Conference Carolinas action on Sunday afternoon at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field in Mount Olive, N.C.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • The first game began with the Trojans getting off to a hot start as Kayla Allen singled to left and then stole second while Callie Ferrell was up to bat. Ferrell walked bringing Anna Ingram to the plate who then doubled to center field scoring both Allen and Ferrell for a 2-0 UMO lead.
  • Alexis Oliver followed Ingram with another double, this time through the left side, that scored Ingram for the 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
  • Eileen Barrera came to the plate next who proceeded to hit a single to centerfield that scored Oliver giving the Trojans the 4-0 advantage.
  • Mount Olive's momentum continued in the bottom of the second as Charlene Thompson led off with an inside the park home run on a hit to right field.
  • Two batters later Ferrell returned to the plate and cranked a hit over the left field fence for the second home run of the inning giving UMO a 6-0 lead that ended the scoring in the second inning.
  • UMO got a free base as Barrera was hit by a pitch on the first throw of the bottom third. Mikayla Koch subbed in as a pinch runner and subsequently stole second while Emily Chaisson was at bat. Chassion singled to right field and advanced to second on the throw as she scored Koch for an RBI.
  • Kristin Power came up to the plate and singled up the middle and advanced to second on an error by the shortstop as Chassion ran home for the Trojans eighth run of the game.
  • After reaching on a fielders choice, Ferrell stole second as Ingram was up to bat. Ingram walked putting two runners on the bases for Barrera who came to the plate following an Oliver fly out to left. 
  • Barrera singled to right field advancing Ingram to second while Ferrell went home to give Mount Olive a 9-0 lead. 
  • The Valkyries failed to score in the top of the fifth therefore giving the Trojans a 5-inning 9-0 win due to collegiate run rules.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Converse led off the game scoring an RBI-single in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead over the Trojans.
  • As the Trojans came up to bat in the bottom of the first, their bats remained hot from the first game as Thompson got things going with a single to the pitcher. After reaching third on a wild pitch and stolen base, Thompson crossed home plate on an Allen single to the shortstop.
  • Ingram came to the plate, following a Ferrell fly out to left, and hit a two-run shot over the left-center wall putting Mount Olive up 3-1 in the bottom of the first.
  • Third baseman Alexis Oliver came up next and hit a home run to the exact spot as Ingram for back-to-back Trojan home runs.
  • The top of the second was quite for the Valkyries, but as Power came to the plate for the Trojans in the bottom half of the inning, she led off with a double to right-center field. Power stole third on a ball to Thompson who then brought Power home on a sacrifice fly to centerfield for a 5-1 Trojans lead.
  • After two quick outs in the bottom of the fourth Oliver got to first on a single through the left side. Barrera followed with a double to left field that advanced Oliver to third. With runners in scoring position, Chaisson came to the plate and reached first on an error by the shortstop that allowed Oliver to score and Barrera to move to third as the Trojans took a 6-1 lead.
  • Converse closed the gap as the third batter of the top half of the inning was walked and then scored as her teammate hit a double to right field putting the score at 6-2 but the Trojans held off the Valkyries for the win and sweep of the doubleheader.
