Trojans Split Opening Day Against FMU Patriots

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive softball team split their opening day against the Patriots of Francis Marion University falling in game one 12-6 and sweeping game two 9-0 in five innings. Charlene Thompson went 3-of-4 in the second game including picking up two hits and an RBI in game one.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Francis Marion opened the doubleheader by getting two runners on base and instantly got into the scorebook with a triple back up the middle by Jessica Harney.
  • The Patriots added one more run an out later with a sacrifice fly and took a 3-0 lead.
  • A two-run home run and a fielder's choice added three more runs to the FMU advantage and Francis Marion led 6-0 after the top of the second.
  • Mount Olive was able to plate a run in the bottom of the second to stop the FMU momentum.
  • Francis Marion, however, went on to add single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and with a three-spot in the sixth, moved ahead by double digits 11-1.
  • UMO did not go down without a fight as the Trojans put up four runs off RBI singles by Cassandra Lassiter, Hannah Burress, and Charlene Thompson, as well as a bases-loaded walk by Madison Morgan.
  • Francis Marion added another run in the top of the seventh and sealed the win as UMO was unable to complete the comeback in the bottom half.
  • Mallory Ratcliff (0-1) was pinned with the loss in the circle as she went one complete allowing six runs off four hits and two walks.

GAME RUNDOWN

  • Mount Olive started game two much differently as a Callie Ferrell RBI-single up the middle put the Trojans up top 1-0.
  • Lassiter added a single run for UMO in the second with a single past the shortstop.
  • A five-run third inning highlighted by an Amber Elliot RBI-single and Lassiter two RBI-single boosted the Trojans ahead 7-0.
  • UMO held the Patriots scoreless in the top of the fifth and set up to end the game early as Eileen Barrera's two RBI-single up the middle pushed home the final runs need to enforce the mercy rule and Mount Olive took game two 9-0.

KEY STATS

  • Haley Brogden (1-0) got the win in game two after going the distance allowing just three hits and three walks.
  • Cassandra Lassiter led the Trojans in game two with three RBI.
