Mount Olive Picks Up First Win Of Season With 78-47 Win Over Queens

Areal Johnson led the University of Mount Olive with a double-double, 23 points and 12 rebounds, as the Trojans defeated Queens University 78-47 in non-conference women's basketball Saturday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C. Jada Bacchus also added a double-double to the Trojan scoring effort.

Mount Olive (1-1) used a 23 point spread in the fourth quarter to secure the win as the Trojans scored 14 unanswered points in route to the victory. Johnson scored 10 of her 23 points in the final quarter.

The Trojans scored the game's first four points as Anamaria Zjacic scored on a layup and Johnson added two free throws. Queens (1-1) responded with back-to-back three-pointers to take the lead 6-4 with 6:25 left in the opening quarter. Mount Olive later spouted off a seven point run to take the Trojan lead to 20-10 with under a minute to play.

Shy'Lia Buie started the second quarter off hot as she not only took the first points of the quarter, but on the next play converted and and-one opportunity to give Mount Olive five points 52 seconds into the quarter. Buie's start sparked a 12 point run by the Trojans as they took a 34-13 lead.

Queens mounted an eight point run in the final minutes to bring the lead down to 39-25 with under three to play before halftime. Mount Olive however, scored the final three points of the half and went in with the momentum.

Coming out of the break Queens opened the third quarter with a streak of nine unanswered points over the first five minutes. Mount Olive, not to be outdone countered with a 15 point run to end the period as the lead grew to 55-40 headed into the final quarter.

The final period did not see an improvement from Queens as Mount Olive outscored the Royals 23-to-7.

Ni'Ya Styles (12), Zjacic (12), and Buie (10) joined Johnson and Bacchus as five Mount Olive players finished in double figures. Kiara Jones had a near double-double as she finished with eight points and 12 boards. Zjacic herself came close to a double-double as well as she was one rebound shy.

Mount Olive will return to Kornegay Arena for the 2015-16 home opener against Virginia Union, Saturday, November 21 at 1 p.m. as part of the 50th Annual Mount Olive pickle Classic.
