MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive's women's basketball student-athlete Felecity Havens was named NCAA Division II Women's Basketball National Player of the Week by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). Havens became the first player in Trojan women's basketball history to win the national player of the week award.
The junior guard received the national award after being named the Conference Carolinas Player of the Week while putting up a total of 67 points in 79 minutes of action while also recording 26 rebounds, seven assists, three blocks and a steal over two games last week. Havens averaged 33.5 points, 13.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game.
She is the 13th Trojan student-athlete overall to receive a national individual award and the third Trojan this year (2017-18) to receive a national recognition.
The Lorain, Ohio native scored 28 points and brought down 17 rebounds in the 98-66 victory over Converse College last Wednesday for her 11th double-double of the season. She contributed 39 points in the two-point loss (87-85) to North Greenville, coming up two points shy of her career-high 41-points, as she shot 12-of-26 from the field, including 7-of-11 from three-point range. Havens added nine rebounds, three assists, and a blocked shot, and made all eight free throw attempts.
The award is the first of Havens' Trojan career and she is the first student-athlete under head coach Wendy Lee to receive the award. In addition to being the first in Trojan women's basketball history, Havens is the third women's player in Conference Carolinas history to earn the award.
"We are extremely excited for Felecity Havens to receive this well-deserved recognition," said head coach Wendy Lee. "Felecity is a tremendous offensive player with outstanding scoring skills. She had a great week of focused play last week with the help of her teammates and we hope she continues to grow as a player and lead her team."
She finished the week shooting 49 percent from the field, including 53 percent (8-of-15) from beyond the arc, and was a perfect 11-of-11 at the free-throw line
Havens leads the conference and ranks fourth in NCAA DII in points per game (23.9) and also sits atop the conference in rebounds per game (10.4).
Mount Olive is back in action as they return home on Saturday, Feb. 10, to face Belmont Abbey College at 2:00 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
