Aerostata Brown Gets Provisional Mark; Trojans Finish 3rd in Conference Championships

Aerostata Brown jumped her way from a conference championship to the NCAA Division II meet Saturday at the Conference Carolinas finals at Lees-McRae College. The sophomore posted a leap of 11.83 meters to win the triple jump and reach a provisional mark. With the effort, she joined teammate Amber Thompson as individual conference champions. As a team, the Trojans finished third.

Brown and Thompson were two of eight Trojans to post top eight finishes for Mount Olive. Thompson led the field in the 3,000 steeplechase, finishing in 11:51.65. She later added a sixth-place finish in the 1,500 in 5:28.00. Brown almost posted a provisional mark in the long jump, where she finished second at 5.59 meters. She was just 0.01 behind the winner and 0.11 away from the provisional mark.

In winning the triple jump, Brown was .06 meters away from the school and meet record held by former Trojan Ariel Stephens-Woodard from 2009. Kanesha Jones finished fifth in the triple jump (10.72) and sixth in the long jump (5.24).

Denise Harrison was the only Trojan to score in three events during the weekend. Harrison posted a mark of 35.44 in the hammer throw to place fourth and 11.14 in the shot put for sixth place. On Friday, he finished fourth in the javelin at 28.22.

The Trojans' most dominating events of the weekend were the shot put and the steeplechase. The Trojans took four of the top six positions in the shot put, led by Jaynell Brown in second with a toss of 12.67 meters -- just 0.14 behind the winner, Onya Daye in third (11.64), Char'De Washington in fifth (11.37) and Harrison. Washington also finished fifth in the hammer throw (34.95). Also in the field events, Charity Grimes placed fourth in the discus (35.26).

In the steeplechase, Thompson was joined in the scoring column by teammates Chelsea Long in third (12:06.21), Christina Jordan in fifth (14:10.24) and Logan Shirley in sixth (14:34.36).

In the distance runs, Megan Bucek joined Thompson in scoring in the 1,500 with a fifth-place finish (5:15.83). In the 800, Wislande Maxy took fourth in 2:29.37. In the 4x400 relay, Maxy was joined by Ashley Jansen, Dorna Spence and Jasmine Taylor in placing fourth in 4:11.99.

In Friday's opening events, Daye took fifth in the javelin (26.62) and Long was fifth in the 10,000 meters (39:20.64).

The Trojans finished third with 86 points, trailing only King (123) and Queens (113.5).

Mount Olive returns to the track May 5 when the Trojans return to Duke University for the Duke Twilight.
