How It Happened

  • The second game of the series did not start as planned as a scheduling issue with the umpires caused the game to be delayed for over an hour and a half.
  • Once play began, Chowan attacked getting the lead-off batter on with a single up the middle by Connor Arcobasso. Arcobasso then moved to second on an infield single and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Trojan third baseman. A RBI groundout allowed the first run to score and the Hawks took a 1-0 lead.
  • Mount Olive answered back in the bottom of the third as Trae Sweeting reached on a single with two outs. Sweeting then advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt went into right field. Zach Mozingo then drove Sweeting home on a RBI-single to left center and the game was knotted at one.
  • The Hawks took the lead back in the top of the fourth. A single into center turned into more than that when the ball got past the Trojan centerfielder and Harry Markotay ended up on third. A sacrifice fly scored Markotay and Chowan led 2-1.
  • UMO bounced back in the bottom of the fifth. Mozingo reached base after getting hit by a pitch. Drew Ellis one batter later put the Trojans back on top with a two-run shot over the right field wall as Mount Olive led 3-2.
  • Mount Olive tacked on some more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back doubles by Ben Connor and Tony Salvaggio pushed the first run of the inning home. A double play wiped the bases clean, however, Sweeting found open grass in right to keep the inning alive. Mozingo doubled home Sweeting to add the second run of the inning. Two straight walks and a hit by pitch walked in another run, and UMO was not done yet. Justin Carroll lifted a 2-2 pitch and deposited it past the trees in left field for a grand slam and the Trojans jumped out to a 10-2 lead. One final run came home on a Surum RBI-single up the middle and the marathon inning ended two batters later.
  • Chowan added a run in the seventh and eighth surrounding a three-run bottom of the seventh for UMO and Mount Olive led 17-4.
  • UMO added a run in the bottom of the eighth for the final run of the game.

  • Braxton Shetley (W: 4-3) took the win on the mound, allowing no earned runs on four hits in five innings of work.

  • Carroll led the way with two hits, a home run, and four RBI, while four other Trojans, Sweeting, Mozingo, Surum, and Salvaggio, recorded multiple hits.
