How It Happened

  • Mount Olive opened the game with some firepower as in the bottom of the first with two away, three straight hits led to Mount Olive runs. Nate Estes and Jett Swetland singled up the middle and made way for Gunner Tolston to clear the bases with a home run to right and put UMO out in front right out of the gate.
  • Newberry answered with solo home runs in the second and third innings before a four-run inning in the fourth gave the Wolves a 6-3 lead.
  • Not to be outdone Mount Olive loaded up and exploded for a 10-run bottom of the fifth to take control of the game.
  • In the inning, the Trojans had run production from Nate Estes, Gunner Tolston, Logan Welch, who gave UMO the 7-6 lead with an RBI-double, Jett Swetland, and JT Stone. Stone highlighted the offensive outburst with his grand slam to right one pitch into a Newberry pitching change.
  • The Wolves added a run in the seventh on a groundout to draw the deficit to 13-7.
  • Estes, in the bottom half, helped the Trojans regain the run it surrendered and push home two additional runs with his three-run home run to left and moved the home nine ahead by nine.
  • The eighth inning saw the final runs scored in the game as Newberry plated a single run in the top half before Mount Olive pushed home six on the bats of Stone, Tolston, and Aaron Hedgepeth.
  • Hunter Brit came in to shut down the ninth inning and following a one-out walk ended the game on a double play and UMO took the 22-8 final.

  • Kai Poffenroth (1-0) picked up the win in relief going two and two-thirds allowing one unearned run, off three hits and struck out one.
  • Gunner Tolston led the team with six RBI going 2-for-4 at the dish.
