Third Quarter Lifts Mount Olive To 83-57 Win Over Lees-McRae

University of Mount Olive used a 28 point third quarter to take down Lees-McRae College 83-57 Tuesday night in Mount Olive, N.C. The third quarter total tied a program high for points scored in the third quarter.

Mount Olive (12-10 Overall, 10-6 Conference Carolinas) kicked off the second half on the right foot. Ni'Ya Styles' three-pointer gave the Trojans a 41-29 lead to start the third. The Trojans looked to put the game out of reach with just over six minutes remaining. Styles hit a jumper to start a 15-0 run the elapsed 4:16 and Mount Olive had a 62-35 lead.

Mount Olive did not allow the lead to fall below 26 for the remainder of the game.

The start of the game saw the Trojans take the lead after a layup by Falicity Havens. Mount Olive had the lead for the first half of the period until a three-pointer by Lees-McRae (7-16, 6-10) gave them the lead 9-8 with 5:30 left. The Trojans did fight back with a 7-0 run to end the the first to tie the game at 19. 

The second quarter started off with another offensive outburst. Kiara Jones kicked off a run of ten unanswered points with a three point play and Mount Olive never looked back as a big second half was the story of the game.

Arieal Johnson led the offense with 18 points and nine boards. Jada Bacchus finished with 14 points and seven rebounds to round out the double digit scorers for Mount Olive.

Mount Olive returns to action Saturday when the Trojans will travel to Erskine for a Conference Carolinas matchup set for 2 p.m.
