Trojans Fall To Limestone 74-65

Mount Olive, N.C. – The University of Mount Olive women's basketball team saw its seven-game win streak snapped as the Trojans fell 74-65 to Limestone College on Friday afternoon in Mount Olive, N.C.

How It Happened


  • Both squads played it close to the wire as the first seven minutes did not see a lead higher than three for either side.
  • Limestone's Aliya Ruffin hit a three-pointer with 3:04 remaining in the opening quarter to start a 10-0 run to end the half as the Saints took a 21-12 lead into the second quarter.


  • Kelly Funderburk's made basket from beyond the arch started a 12-3 run at the 9:18 mark for the Trojans and cut the lead under double digits at 24-17.
  • Mount Olive surrendered a three-point basket to the Saints but responded with eight unanswered points to draw the deficit to three with 6:35 left in the half.
  • Ni'Ya Styles tied the game with a three-pointer with 3:50 to play, however, Limestone answered with a three of its own to regain the lead.
  • Funderburk again started another key run to end the half as she contributed five points in an 8-0 run that gave UMO a 39-34 lead heading into the break.


  • Mount Olive held on to its lead until halfway through the third quarter. Limestone down 46-41 went on an 8-0 run of their own to take the lead back with 3:59 to go in the quarter.
  • Felicity Havens gave the lead back to the Trojans with a five-point swing as she knocked in two baskets to give Mount Olive a 51-47 lead.
  • Limestone had the final shot of the quarter as Jasmine Kearse hit a three-point jumper to draw the Trojan lead to one.


  • The Saints opened the final quarter with back-to-back buckets to give them a 54-51 cushion, a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. 


  • Daria Simmons and Styles led the team with 14 points. Simmons chipped in six assists and four rebounds.
  • Freshman Kelly Funderburk contributed a career-high 13 points and also added three boards.
  • Also in double figures was Havens who finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.
  • UMO was just outshot by Limestone, 41.5% to 41.0%.

Mount Olive will remain home for a Conference Carolinas matchup with Southern Wesleyan Saturday, January 7 at 2 p.m. Due to impending weather stay tuned to for any game status changes.
